In Vitro Fertilisation
Together, We’ll Navigate the Journey to New Life.
In Vitro Fertilisation is an Assisted Reproductive treatment with high success rates. This procedure is one of the most effective options for many people unable to achieve pregnancy naturally.
FIV Valencia is one of the most experienced centres in Spain for In Vitro Fertilisation. Our personalised medical diagnosis and the high standards of our laboratory are two key factors that enable us to achieve the best results in our IVF treatments: 100% tailored to you.
Who is In Vitro Fertilisation Suitable For?
IVF can be an effective solution for many people experiencing infertility. After a thorough diagnosis, your doctor at FIV Valencia will determine if IVF is the best option for you.
Every case is unique, which is why FIV Valencia provides you with an individualised diagnosis and treatment plan.
IVF is recommended in the following cases:
For more detailed information, visit our page dedicated to the causes of infertility. There you can learn more about the underlying factors affecting fertility and how IVF can help overcome them.
- Unexplained Infertility: When there is no clear reason for the inability to conceive after a prolonged period of trying.
- Age-Related Fertility Decline: For women over 38 years or those with a diminished ovarian reserve, IVF offers a higher success rate compared to other fertility treatments.
- Blocked Fallopian Tubes: IVF is advised when anatomical issues in the female reproductive system, such as blocked fallopian tubes, prevent sperm from reaching the egg.
- Ovulation Disorders: Women who have not been able to conceive using ovulation-stimulating medications (e.g., anti-estrogens) may benefit from IVF.
- Male-Factor Infertility: Couples where the male partner has a low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal morphology.
- Genetic Conditions: When there is a known risk of passing on severe hereditary diseases, IVF with Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) can be used to select the healthiest embryos for transfer. This is also recommended for cases of implantation failure or recurrent miscarriage.
- Failed Artificial Insemination Treatments: IVF may be considered the best alternative after several unsuccessful attempts at artificial insemination.
- Severe Endometriosis (Stage III-IV): IVF is a suitable option for women with advanced endometriosis, which can interfere with natural conception.
The IVF Process: How Does In Vitro Fertilisation Work?
IVF involves several key steps before, during, and after the procedure. The FIV Valencia team will support you at every stage of your IVF treatment:
During your first visit, FIV Valencia will offer you the opportunity to undergo a personalised fertility diagnosis. Through the Individualised Diagnostic Study (EDI), we will evaluate your and your partner’s fertility, review your medical history, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This comprehensive approach ensures we recommend the techniques necessary to help you achieve your goal of becoming a parent.
To increase the chances of pregnancy, your doctor will prescribe medication to stimulate your ovaries. The gonadotropin (FSH) medication plan will be customised to encourage the development of one to three follicles, where your eggs are located.
We will monitor your ovarian progress through transvaginal ultrasounds to ensure your follicles are developing correctly.
When at least one follicle reaches the appropriate size (usually 18mm or more), ovulation will be triggered with an injection of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Within 36-48 hours, your eggs will be released into the fallopian tubes, and we will schedule the egg retrieval procedure (follicular puncture).
Once the eggs have matured, we will schedule their retrieval through follicular puncture. This procedure is performed under mild sedation and is guided by ultrasound.
In the laboratory, our biologists will evaluate the quality and maturity of your eggs to ensure they are ready for fertilisation. If necessary, we will discuss the option of using donor eggs with you. FIV Valencia has its own egg donor bank, allowing us to select the most suitable donor for your needs.
In IVF treatments, sperm samples are usually collected on the same day as egg retrieval. If the sperm quality is good, it will be processed in the laboratory and used immediately for fertilisation or frozen for later use.
At FIV Valencia, we have a specialised male-fertility unit. If sperm cannot be obtained naturally through masturbation, we can retrieve sperm through a surgical procedure.
If the sperm is unable to fertilise the egg, we will discuss the option of using donor sperm with you.
After retrieving the gametes, fertilisation is performed in the laboratory by our experienced embryologists. Depending on the patient’s needs, IVF can be performed conventionally or using Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg. Our specialists will guide you on the most appropriate method.
After fertilisation, embryos are carefully monitored as they grow in the incubator in our laboratory. Their development is evaluated over several days, and the healthiest and most viable embryos are selected for transfer. High-quality embryos not transferred are cryopreserved for future treatments.
If there is a risk of genetic abnormalities or a history of previous implantation failures, Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) can be performed to select embryos without genetic anomalies, significantly improving IVF success rates. Your doctor will advise you whether genetic testing is recommended for your Assisted Reproduction treatment at FIV Valencia.
Once the embryos reach the optimal development stage, they are transferred to the uterus. The embryo transfer procedure is quick and is performed in our clinic’s operating theatre under ultrasound guidance. The embryos are placed directly into the uterus using a catheter.
After the embryo transfer, you will be advised to rest for about 30 minutes in a private room at the clinic. After this brief period, you can resume your normal activities, although strenuous exercise should be avoided.
After embryo transfer, your doctor may recommend progesterone supplements to help maintain the uterine lining, ensuring the best conditions for the fertilised egg to implant and to establish a successful pregnancy.
Approximately 14 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test will be conducted to confirm the outcome. This test involves measuring beta hCG levels in blood or urine. If positive, an ultrasound will be scheduled 7-10 days later to confirm the pregnancy.
What Should You Know Before Starting IVF Treatment?
Before beginning IVF treatment, your specialist at FIV Valencia will thoroughly explain the process, necessary tests,, potential risks, and key requirements to maximise your chances of success.
Pre-IVF Tests and Medical Examinations:
Tests for Women
- Ovarian Reserve Testing: This test predicts how your ovaries will respond to fertility medications by providing information on the quantity and quality of your eggs. It is performed through a blood test to measure anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels.
- Mock Transfer or Catheter Test: To ensure a smooth and successful embryo transfer during your IVF cycle, a mock transfer or catheter test may be performed.
- Uterine Examination: The health and structure of your uterus are evaluated through ultrasound to rule out abnormalities that may affect embryo implantation.
Tests for Men
- Semen Analysis: A basic fertility test for men that examines the number, motility, and morphology of sperm to determine whether specialised techniques are needed for IVF treatment.
Tests for Both Partners (Heterosexual Couples):
- Infection Screening: Testing for infections such as HIV, hepatitis, or other diseases is required before starting IVF to ensure a safe and healthy environment for conception and pregnancy.

FAQs
How long does IVF treatment take?
The duration of IVF treatment depends on each patient’s circumstances and the number of cycles required. At FIV Valencia, the process typically takes between 30 and 45 days from the first visit to embryo transfer.
What is the age limit for IVF treatment?
If ovarian reserve or egg quality is insufficient for IVF using your own gametes, we may recommend an egg donation treatment. Success rates for IVF with your own eggs decrease significantly after the age of 42.
What are the advantages of IVF?
IVF is one of the most effective Assisted Reproductive treatments, offering multiple benefits:
- High success rates for various fertility issues
- Helps overcome infertility caused by factors such as blocked fallopian tubes or male-factor infertility
- Option to use donor eggs or sperm
- Suitability for heterosexual couples, single women, and same-sex couples
- Ability to perform genetic testing to reduce the risk of hereditary diseases
Is IVF painful?
At FIV Valencia, our specialised team ensures that you feel supported and comfortable at every stage of the treatment.
- Ovulation Induction: Hormonal medications may cause mild side effects such as bloating, mood changes, or breast tenderness.
- Egg Retrieval: This procedure is performed under sedation, and any mild discomfort or bloating usually subsides quickly.
- Embryo Transfer: A quick and generally painless procedure, though some women may experience mild discomfort.
- Luteal Phase Support: Hormonal medications may cause mild discomfort but are generally well-tolerated.
Are there side effects or risks associated with IVF?
IVF is a safe Assisted Reproductive treatment. At FIV Valencia, your doctor will carefully monitor and adjust your treatment plan to minimise discomfort and to avoid risks such as Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS), which can cause ovarian swelling and abdominal pain. Thanks to personalised medication doses, we have reduced OHSS cases to less than 1%.
What is the most effective fertility treatment?
IVF is the most effective treatment for many fertility issues. However, the effectiveness of any fertility treatment depends on several factors, including age, health conditions, and the underlying cause of infertility.
Is IVF possible for single women and same-sex couples?
Single women and lesbian couples can achieve pregnancy through IVF using donor sperm. FIV Valencia has a specialised unit for new family models to provide the best information and support for these patients.
How can I prepare my body for IVF?
Before starting IVF treatment, it’s essential to undergo preliminary exams for a comprehensive diagnostic study:
- Ovarian reserve testing
